DIGITAL CONTENT FOR GLOBAL MOBILE SERVICES
In January 2001, the European Commission launched the e-Content programme, aiming to stimulate the development and use of digital content on the global networks and promote linguistic diversity in the European Union.
Given the recent developments of the mobile communications industry, the distribution of content on mobile devices might matter as much - if not more - than the distribution of digital content on the Internet. The European Commission DG Information Society has mandated a study to identify the major actions that can be taken by the industry, the Member States and the European Commission to foster the development of the mobile content market in Europe.
This study was carried out between May 2001 and December 2001. Thirty-three interviews with market players were performed. The results were validated by a Steering Committee of 12 members covering a large part of the mobile content industry.
