Core2000 (20644)

The partners PSA Peugeot Citroen and SAGEM of France, SIEMENS of Germany, and SYNDESIS of Greece initiated the collaborative ESPRIT Project "Core2000" in order to enable car manufacturers to address the EURO2000 regulation requirement timely and cost effectively. SAGEM has already developed the EURO2000 and OBD compliant engine management systems for Jaguar and Rover. The new challenge, however, is the necessity of a important cost reduction.

Mainly this will be achieved by minimising hardware cost, in particular by:

With its second generation Fuzzy Logic Development Environment (FLDE) for embedded systems, SYNDESIS is contributing to the development of fuzzy logic-based software for a specific engine management control function. In particular FLDE will be extended to address automotive concerns by enhancing its integration in the user's existing development life-cycle and tool-chain, and it will be optimised for the specific microcontroller and the real-time kernel being employed. Thus, fuzzy logic control strategies will be integrated with other software paradigms.

SIEMENS AG is developing a highly integrated microcontroller based on the existing C166 architecture. A variety of derivatives of this microcontroller are already widely used in power train applications. This particular variation will provide the integration of all necessary peripherals and flash memory to achieve best performance at the lowest system cost.

The requirement to reduce fuel consumption as well as emission of pollutants for the very large number of combustion engines in use is all pervasive. The European Commission underpinned this requirement with the regulation EURO2000 which will become applicable in the year 2000 for all passenger cars. This regulation represents an additional challenge for European manufacturers of high volume small and medium size cars for which production costs are extremely sensitive. The Project Core2000 is will deliver an Engine Management System competitively meeting this challenge.
