Information Day Early Warning Systems for Geo-Physical Hazards
- 31 January 2006, Paris, France
On the 31st January 2006, the Directorate General for Information Society and Media (DG INFSO) of the European Commission (EC) held an Info-Day to announce the launch of its sixth call for research proposals in the area of tsunami early warning systems (TEWS). This meeting was kindly hosted by UNESCO-Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), at 1 Rue Miollis, in Paris. Over 100 participants from within and outside Europe attended the event. The meeting also provided a forum to discuss existing international coordination efforts, current and future needs related to the establishment of TEWS, and enabled EU and non-EU potential partners to engage in networking activities (see draft agenda).
The event was opened by Patricio Bernal, Director of the IOC, and Guy Weets, Deputy Head of the ICT for Sustainable Growth Unit of DG INFSO. Keynote speakers included:
- Patricio Bernal
- Ezio Bussoletti
- Stefanie Dannenmann
- Stefano Tinti
- Jörn Lauterjung
- Alessandro Annunziato
- Karen Fabbri
- Guy Weets
- Denis Peter
The afternoon session was devoted to "networking" and partner search. Over 60 brief presentations were given, the slides of which can be downloaded according to the last name of each presenter.
The overall objective of the call for proposals is to contribute to the development, validation and demonstration of advanced systems and services to manage geo-physical risks, with a focus on developing an early warning and alert capacity for improved disaster prevention and preparedness in coastal zones. The specific objective is to establish operational prototypes for tsunami detection, early warning and alert relevant to the main tsunami-prone regions in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and Indian Ocean. Additional support measures include; technology transfer between EU and tsunami-prone countries and regions bordering the Indian Ocean, for sharing best practice, promoting standards and adapting these to local needs and conditions; Collaboration with specialised institutes in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea with the aim of promoting a harmonised approach to tsunami early warning and alert for the Mediterranean basin. The approximate budget is of 5 million Euros, and the deadline for submission is 25th April 2006. For more information specific to the call consult the slides by K. Fabbri and visit the official EC websites at:
