The Community's fourth programme of medical and health research (1987-1991) has published a number of final reports in book form. These are: - "Advances in Biomedical Engineering: Results of the 4th EC Medical and Health Research Programme", Edited by J.E.W. Beneken and V. Thevenin, IOS Press 1993 (ISBN-90-5199-119-3): This volume contains the final reports of 21 medical technology projects in the areas of diagnostics methods and monitoring, treatment and rehabilitation, technical and clinical evaluation. - "Health Services Research", Edited by G. N. Fracchia and M. Theofilatron, IOS Press (ISBN-90-5199-136-3): The projects presented in this book concern how health services in Europe work, are managed, financed and planned. Research activities were launched in the four priority areas of prevention, care delivery systems, health care organization, and health technology assessment. Funds provided by the EC met the costs of coordination of the research networks or Concerted Actions and covered the organization of meetings and workshops, scientific and administrative support, centralized data handling, and dissemination of results through publication outlets. The outcome of this coordinated work should be seen as an insight into European health policy instruments rather than a complete source of information on developments in this area.
