During the Culture/Audiovisual Council Meeting of 3-4 April 1995 in Luxembourg, the Commissioner for culture and audiovisual policy, Mr. Marcelino Oreja, presented three new programmes in the field of European culture: KALEIDOSCOPE 2000, ARIANE and RAPHAEL. The Council decided to have the three programmes examined by the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) in the following two months. KALEIDOSCOPE 2000 is a programme supporting European artistic and cultural activities. It is due to start in 1996, for a period of five years, and is aimed at encouraging the knowledge of European culture, in particular in the fields of the plastic arts, theatrical arts, multimedia and applied arts, by means of cultural exchanges and events. ARIANE will promote European artistic literary creation, notably by means of translation. It is also for a period of five years, commencing in 1996. RAPHAEL will support activities in the field of cultural heritage.
