The European Commission has published a report on the European Community's "Activities in favour of SMEs and the craft sector". The object of publishing the report is to raise awareness of Community measures in support of SMEs, as well as to provide a better understanding of the needs of SMEs. The report outlines Community actions to improve the business environment for SMEs, both through enterprise policy, and through other policies such as the internal market programme and competition policy. The report details the Community programmes and support measures which have benefited SMEs. These include: - Euro-Info Centres; - Networks and cooperation programmes for SMEs; - Pilot schemes under enterprise policy; - Community financial instruments: the European Investment Bank and Structural Funds; - RTD programmes under the Framework Programmes; - Vocational training programmes; - Other Community programmes, including those for cooperation with third countries. The report also stresses the need for consultation and coordination with SMEs and their representative organizations, particularly in the context of the "social dialogue".
