A report from the Court of Auditors sets out the evolution of the Joint European Torus (JET) Joint Undertaking, its scientific achievements and future development, and examines related budgetary and management issues. The Court considers such a report appropriate in view of JET's prolongation to 1992 (the project was originally due to come to an end in 1990) and the proposal for a further extension to the end of 1996. As initial preparations are already being made for the Next Step, the Court also examines the scientific and administrative management systems of the JET project, to identify lessons which can be learned for the Next Step and any possible later stages in the European fusion programme. The nineteen-page report, published in the Official Journal of the European Communities, is entitled "Court of Auditors evaluation of the management of JET: Study attached to the specific annual report on the 1990 accounts of the Joint Undertaking accompanied by the reply of the Director of JET, including observations of the Commission of the European Communities".
