The Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) has published a report outlining the results of a study, commissioned by the programme, undertaken by six panels of experts in various fields of communications technologies. The aim of the study was to ensure that European research in this area remains centred on the most significant communications issues. With this in mind, the six expert panels were asked to provide a visionary insight into the most significant aspects of the future Information Society. The panels addressed the following main areas: - Panel 1: Strategic requirements; - Panel 2: Innovative network architectures; - Panel 3: Super intelligent networks; - Panel 4: Advanced wireless and mobility concepts; - Panel 5: End to end photonics; - Panel 6: From multimedia to telepresence. The main results of the work undertaken is presented in the report. The recommendations from the different panels emphasize the wide variety of emerging applications and the profound shifts taking place within the communications industry itself. It is hoped that these suggestions and recommendations will provide an important contribution to the reflection process leading to the establishment of new RTD priorities in the field of communications - particularly in so far as the Fifth Framework Programme is concerned.
