EU Research and Innovation News Goes Polish
Luxembourg - Warsaw, 04.02.2005
CORDIS, the European Union’s research and innovation portal, launched today its daily news service in Polish (cordis.europa.eu/news/pl/). Mr Janez Potocnik, Commissioner for Science and Research, and Professor Michal Kleiber, Polish Minister of Scientific Research and Information Technology, welcomed the announcement made in their presence at a press conference in Warsaw.
The new service will benefit Polish researchers, entrepreneurs, policy makers, as well as journalists thanks to free, faster and easier access to EU research and innovation information. It also aims to help boost Polish participation in the EU research programmes and attract smaller companies to the benefits of the knowledge-based economy.
CORDIS - a comprehensive information source
Since January 2005, the Publications Office in Luxembourg covers a new range of activities addressing the needs of the scientific community. CORDIS - the Community Research and Development Information Service - provides valuable information for participants in Community - framework programmes. CORDIS contains ten searchable databases such as news, programmes, projects, contacts, partners and results as well as a comprehensive library of over 86 000 downloadable documents. There are over 150 000 web pages. CORDIS dates back to 1990 and is accessible online since 1994. The service currently lists over 100 000 registered users in some 170 countries worldwide.
The latest on European R&D
CORDIS News is the EU’s official specialist online news service on research and innovation. The service reports daily on all EU R&D related policy developments and implementation measures, events across Europe and funding opportunities, available through the EU’s research programmes. The current Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), covering the period 2002-2006, has a research budget of nearly 20 billion euros. Keeping its users abreast of new developments, CORDIS News is already reporting on the discussions on the future Seventh Framework Programme for 2007 and beyond.
The service also brings news and views of EU programme managers, key stakeholders, leading research personalities and policy makers on key issues and challenges for the future of European research. The new Polish service on CORDIS means that now Polish researchers and companies can easily find out how to make the best of their EU membership.
“The launch of CORDIS News in Polish is proof of our commitment to facilitating improved competitiveness for the whole of the newly enlarged EU through knowledge sharing and dissemination”, said Thomas L. Cranfield, Director of the Publications Office. The news service in Polish is just the first step in the efforts of increasing the multilingual dimension of the CORDIS services, already available in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian. The Publications Office’s legal information service EUR-Lex is already available online in Polish and further services in Polish will be announced later this spring.
Promoting Polish participation in the European Research Area
Polish participation in EU-funded research is featured by CORDIS News, the latest examples including FP6 projects coordinated by Polish organisations and the launch of Poland's equivalent of the European technology platforms. The stories are also highlighted on the fledgling CORDIS national service for Poland cordis.europa.eu/poland/. This service is part of a larger portal on national research and innovation, developed by CORDIS to foster information exchange and communication among the national players in the European Research Area.
