Objective Enhancer-trapping in the fruitfly Drosophila is a versatile approach for generation of cell markers and isolation of developmentally regulated genes. A recent variant of the approach, P-GAL4 enhancer-trapping, allows in principle the expression of any cloned gene in virtually any cell type. First, we will generate several thousand P-GAL4 enhancer-trap fly lines and make them generally available to the Drosophila research community; this resource will be of particular use to the European fly community. Second, we will use many of the lines generated for collaborative work in developmental neurobiology. At a later date, these enchancer-trap lines may also be of use for fly genome mapping.
