Sustainable and symbiotic development of tourism activities and environment in the Aegean archipelago: the Cyclades pilot project

Objective

The aim of this project is to relate island research and policy methods and techniques as applied to the Greek islands group of Cyclades. The results of the project will provide: a) basic insight in the island environmental issues, b) identification of selected environmentally friendly forms of tourist activity to be implemented, c) analysis of present situation and trends, d) a differentiating specific computer model of physical development, e) specific guidelines and proposals.

The overall purpose of this project is to relate island research and policy methods and techniques as applied to the Greek islands group of Cyclades in order to ensure and promote an environmentally friendly growth of existing and new tourism activities of the island regions, analysis of present situation and trends a differentiating, specific computer model of physical development specific guidelines and proposals.

The results of the project will provide:

a) basic insight in the island environmental issues

b) analysis of present situation and trends regarding general development and tourism-specific variables as they relate to environmental protection

c) a differentiating, specific computer model of physical development which will enable a careful choice of development sites and quantities for tourism, which will identify areas that should be protected from tourist pressures, and which will propose modes of tourist activities that coincide with natural values.

d) specific guidelines and proposals as to utilization of environmental resources for the benefit and for the balanced tourism development with reference to avoidance of unnecessary and damaging exploitation of the same resources.

e) identification of selected environmentally friendly forms of tourist activity to be implemented, under pilot project specifications in selected localities with the support of local government, professional organizations and visitors.
