Objective Ocean current power is known to offer a huge potential of renewable energy along the coastlines of Europe and for islands. The steadyness of ocean currents and the independance from seasons and daytime make that ocean power is almost constantly available and storage devices are only required to a very small extend. This distinguishes ocean power from most of the other renewable energy sources. Up to now, research on ocean current power use has been limited to potential assessment and technical development. In order to push the development of this promising technology further, plans for ocean current power integration into energy supply structures of islands and coastal regions must now be developed and implemented. In this project, operational plans for the integration of ocean current power into the energy supply schemes of islands and coastal regions in Morocco and Spain will be developed. The target regions are the Canary Islands and the coasts of the Straight of Gibraltar. Technologies that require little civil works and that have therefore only a small impact on the environment will be considered. The installations planned will later-on be installed, maintained and owned by local utilities. A methodology will be developed for the planning of the ocean current power integration on islands and in coastal regions that will be utilizable for other European and mediterranean regions. Partners in this project will be the institutes INTECSA (Spain), and CENET (Germany) and the University of Gran Canaria (Spain). The local utility involved in this project is ENALSA (Lanzarote / Spain). CDER (belonging to the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Morocco) and the industrial partner Tecnomare (ltaly) will be tied up as subcontractors.
