Objective Reverse Engineering Ltd (REL), an engineering consultancy firm using numerical simulation tools, have obvious HPCN requirements, but are unable to justify the large capital costs of purchasing high end equipment. Typical uses are the numerical simulations of the responses of structures to blast impact and explosive loading. Applications for this work include the development of side impact safety systems for vehicles, and the qualification and decommissioning of offshore structures. The main objectives of the project are: To show how existing hardware resources can be utilised more efficiently by exploiting high performance networking. To investigate the usefulness of European broadband networks for improving working practices and increasing the throughput of work. To investigate the usefulness of visualisation environments for embedded computational steering of remote simulations. The results of the experiments will be reduced execution times for existing numerical simulations and the ability to run larger simulations which more accurately capture the physics of the problems. Through dissemination and training activities, the results of the project will promote the use of HPCN amongst engineering firms within Europe encouraging them to improve their competitiveness. In addition, through REL's client base the results will be disseminated into different market sectors throughout Europe.
