Objective The objective of the research project is to determine the maximum admissible contents for each impurity element of lead used in batteries and to study the effect of impurities on the behaviour of lead and calcium grids, mainly regarding corrosion. This work will deal with the studying of the effect of the quality of lead in real conditions. Test cells and test batteries will be built. Their performances will be measured. The evolution of contents will be evaluated (impurity migration). This study will be done for a large set of analyses. To study the effect of impurities on the behaviour of lead and calcium grids, mainly regarding corrosion. A survey of problems occurring in industrial use of batteries will be made. The corrosion curves of the different alloys will be established. Test cells will be made and submitted to charge and discharge. A metallographic observation of all samples will be performed after testing. To evaluate the economic implication of each impurity on the recycling process. Methods able to eliminate impurities at a reasonable expense will then be studied, and the refining costs compared with the cost of primary lead. Ultimate allowable impurity levels may be related to the designed life of particular types of battery. To develop techniques for the separation and classification of spent lead acid batteries treated in the secondary lead smelters and to optimize the metallurgical treatment of each class. A refining process will be studied. Its purpose is not to be complete, but only to meet the specifications given by other studies, for which some admissible impurity contents can be rather high. The different processes to be studied include pyrometallurgical techniques and molten salts.
