Development of a model optimizing the reuse of building and demolition waste and reducing the environmental impact of this waste

Objective

To establish a basis for:
- a maximum recovery of waste materials from all kinds of construction and demolition activities.
- less possible environmental impact caused by construction materials in the whole lifetime of a building from the construction stage to the final disposal/recycling of the demolished materials.
The recycling of building and demolition waste was studied with the aim of reducing the enormous amounts of waste produced during the life cycles of constructions and reducing the exploitation of primary raw materials because of scarcity or unacceptable environmental consequences. An inventory has been produced dealing with the technical, environmental and recycling aspects of building elements with respect to design, construction, use, maintenance, demolition and recycling in order to set up criteria for recycling, taking the benefit of reducing environmental impact into consideration. A systematic registration of building elements was carried out. A model has been developed, based on the systematic registration of building elements and the inventory, for optimizing the recycling process with due consideration of the environmental impact. The tools in the model were developed for application in procedures for use at the following levels:
building authorities;
consulting engineers and architects;
building users;
demolition contractors;
recycling industries. These cover all relevant phases of a building from design to demolition.
- The aim of the project is to identify the problem areas within materials and construction methods etc which causes problems with regards to:
- Environment, indoor climate, working environment, future recyclability, during the lifetime of a building/civil engineering structure. Furthermore, the objective is to establish a method to a continuous registration of existing and new construction material/components for the purpose of identifying the negative and positive effects which may arise in the future lifetime of a building as well as in the demolition phase.

The purpose of the registration is to evaluate the recyclability of the materials as well as the environmental impact from hazardous substances. A basis for regulating/effecting a possible future negative or positive trend can thus be made.

Finally specifications for substitution of certain non-appropriate materials/construction methods at present applied in the building sector will be proposed.
