Market potential analysis for introduction of hydrogen energy technology in stand alone power systems

Objective

Stand alone power systems (SAPS) provide power to technical installations and communities in remote areas. An increasing number of SAPSs include renewable energy technologies, i.e. solar or wind power, most often in combination with diesel generators and/or batteries for backup power. Hydrogen can be produced from renewable energy (RE) at the site. In periods with limited RE availability the hydrogen is used for power production in fuel cells. The hydrogen and fuel cell technology is developing fast and the SAPS market is believed to be a market segment where this new technology can be competitive in the near future. However, barriers in the SAPS market can slow down and limit the introduction of hydrogen energy technology, thus also the RE energy utilisation in remote power production. The objective of the present project proposal is to analyse the European market potential for SAPS with hydrogen energy subsystems, to identify the main market barriers and to initiate processes to break the barriers down.

Description:

The uniqueness in the proposed analysis is that it is based on parameters from stand alone power systems in operation and knowledge about the present European SAPS markets rather than theoretical assumptions. The market study is expected to yield estimates of the market size (kW), market value (Euro) and projections for the future development. As part of the analysis, the project will determine significant barriers in the market development. The proposed project will directly address the barriers by presenting a high quality market analysis, which reduces the uncertainty about the market potential. The key actors in this market should reach a common awareness about the main challenges and the actions to be taken. The key actors will be included through interviews, discussions and participation at a workshop. The project will further present a plan for European demonstration projects where hydrogen energy technology is introduced in various categories of SAPS. An evaluation of relevant legislation, regulations and policies will be presented as a tool for authorities who are working to promote these new technologies.
The three main product 'groups' from the project are as follows; A series of documents presenting the results of the market study, a network of key actors addressing the market barriers removal and a plan for promotion of the market development through demonstration installations. Barriers due to lack of market information, inadequate institutional mechanisms and lack of technological standards will be thus be removed. The proposed action thus is an initiative to stimulate both the RE markets and the emerging hydrogen energy market. The results from the analysis will be presented in reports to be distributed through the network of key actors established during the project. The documents will also be made available on the Internet. Representatives from the consortium will also present the project the and results at relevant European and international conferences.
