Hearing and vision technologies: state of the art and new challenges

Objective

European society has a vision of extending equal opportunities to all citizens, including those with physical disabilities and/or learning difficulties. This is becoming increasingly important due to the growth in the population with age related disabilities as a result of increased longevity, in particular hearing and vision loss. In younger people increasing exposure to high volume noise is leading to hearing loss. There are three different types of barriers to equal opportunities: attitudinal ones resulting in prejudice and discrimination, inaccessible infrastructure and physiological barriers resulting from the nature of the disability. Technological aids and assistant devices are vital in overcoming the physiological barriers and the barriers due to inaccessible infrastructure and giving people with disabilities the psychological confidence and physical support to live and work independently. Other measures will be required to change attitudes and overcome prejudice and discrimination.
This Conference will focus on the research needed to develop and extend technological aids and assistant devices to facilitate independent living and working and participation in all aspects of society and community life by people with hearing and/or vision impairments.

The objectives of the Conference are:

- To provide a forum which brings together young researchers, established experts and industrialists;
- To provide high quality training for young researchers in assistant technology;
- To determine and initiate the new engineering, technological and fundamental science research and development required to resolve outstanding problems in assistant technology;
- To encourage the development of new research and development collaborations in assistant technology;
- To encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas across the interdisciplinary field;
- To focus on the use of technological;
- To provide a workshop interface between social science, medicine, human factors, design and technological areas such as communications, mechanical and electronics engineering.
