Objective The aim of the project is to develop and operate, on an industrial scale, a new-design electric arc furnace with an attached shaft for continuous scrap loading and scrap preheating. The hot waste gases from the furnace will be sucked through the scrap column of the pre-heater shaft where they will be cooled down. The dust contained in the waste gases will be partially trapped by the scrap column. The material to be melted will continuously flow from the shaft into the furnace hearth. The main aim is to assess the feasibility of reducing energy consumption, shortening melting-time, reducing electrode consumption and noise level as well as of using wet and contaminated scrap.
