On-line analysis of molten steel for automated steel production (1st phase)

Objective

The objective of the proposed pilot project is to build and test an on-line analysis system for monitoring and measuring the change in concentration of various elements in liquid steel. The method employed will be laser-induced spectroscopy. The access to the surface of the liquid steel will be accomplished via a narrow channel through the sidewall of a converter. The channel will be kept free by an argon gas stream and the plasma-producing light of the laser will be focused via an optic fiber onto the liquid steel surface. The analytical plasma light will be imaged onto the slit of a spectrometer using the same optic fiber and specially designed optics and is detected by gated photodiode array in the focal plane of the monochromator. Phase 1 of the project is devoted to monitoring the carbon content change in an AOD converter, located in Bochum and producing high-alloyed steel. The reference laboratory will be build up and run at the university of Madrid.
