Recommendations on protection: dissemination of international radiation results

Objective

Recommendations of ICRP, the International Commission on Radiological Protection, aim to achieve an appropriate standard of radiological protection without unduly limiting beneficial practices. Our most important current task is to issue new basic recommendations in 2005/6, based on and developing the ICRP 1990 Recommendations underlying the European Basic Safety Standards Directive. The new Recommendations will be supported by several Foundation docu- ments and supplemented by a number of advisory guidance documents. The results of Euratom funded research form a major source of input to this process, and in several cases such results lend themselves to conversion to the format of radiological protection recommendations. A significant part of the work of ICRP is to disseminate research results in a format of protection recommendations and to an audience of regulators and operators who may not otherwise be fully conversant with these results. Funding is now requested for such dissemination of results relating to an important research topic in the Euratom programme: protection of 'the environ- ment' against harmful effects of radiation. So far, radiological protection recommendations have focused on protection of man. No inter- nationally agreed criteria or policies address protection of the environment from radiation, and it is difficult to determine whether non-human species are adequately protected. By disseminating results obtained in the recent Euratom FASSET project, and emerging results from the Euratom ERICA project, ICRP is developing a framework to fill this conceptual gap. The main activity to be funded is meetings to draft, review, and approve reports.
