European AIDS treatment Network

Objective

NEAT's mission is to strengthen European HIV clinical research capacity by building a clinical and laboratory network in HIV therapeutics. NEAT will catalyse a critical mass of resources and expertise, with the direct involvement of 37 core partners from 16 countries (National Agencies, leading Clinical Centres and Universities and the PLWHA community) and over 350 affiliated centers of established international reputation, to promote, guide and speed up innovative therapeutic approaches in different HIV/AIDS areas, including strategic use of antiretrovirals, evaluation of immunotherapeutic approaches and hepatitis/HIV co-infection.
NEAT is committed to design the roadmap for a durable reshaping of the way clinical research is carried out in Europe so as to achieve a progressive and lasting integration. In doing so, NEAT will pave the way toward the creation of the European Research Area, capable of integrating and coordinating genuine, independent and interdependent research programmes.
NEAT will be able to attract public and private co-funding and positively interact with other non-EU organizations and research agencies.
NEAT Joint Programme of Activities (JPA) includes integrating activities, jointly executed research, and activities designed to spread excellence. Research will focus on developing innovative and strategic approaches to HIV/AIDS therapy, and on complementing clinical research conducted by the pharmaceutical industry.
NEAT will promote translational research, from proof-of-principle, to phase III-IV strategic effectiveness trials. NEAT will interact with European and National regulatory authorities and will harmonize efficacy and safety data gathering at the European level, will implement the EU directives on clinical research, will optimize resources and infrastructures throughout Europe, and will disseminate technology and ethical rules. The Network will also spread expertise and resources, provide training and mobility.
