Within the 6th Framework Programme (2002-2006) for research, technological development and demonstration (RTD), environmental research is mainly funded under the "Global Change and Ecosystems" (GCE) thematic sub-priority.
This site provides information on the research activities to be funded by the European Commission under this sub-priority as well as support for the submission of proposals and project management.
Complementarily to the research areas defined under the "Global Change and Ecosystems" sub-priority, environmental research will also be financed through specific activities designed to provide Scientific Support to Policies (SSP).

More participation of new Member States and candidate countries in Global Change and Ecosystems research is needed
|
The enlargement of the European Union in 2004 gives also the opportunity to enlarge the scientific cooperation. In fact, cooperation with East and Southeast European countries is essential to tackle topics in environmental research with a wider regional dimension such as climate change, biodiversity and water. International Partnerships: a matter of top scientific and political priority
| The European Commission has earmarked funds specifically for third country participants. All consortia are encouraged to co-operate with third country partners where those would bring an added-value to the project. Funding for the participation of researchers teams and institutions from third countries (i.e. states that are neither Member States nor states associated to the Framework Programme) can be made available in most cases in the same way as for EU partners (see here for conditions) |
