Objectives of research
Main objectives:
The MORANE project aims at developing an integrated radio system based on the GSM standard in the 900 MHz band for application in the European railway networks (GSM-R). The device will be able to support the requirements arising from 'ERTMS/ETCS applications and to be extended to multimedia services for passengers. This will entail an extension of the GSM standard system in order to meet the following operational and safety requirements: 1. Railway operations : Man Machine Interfaces (MMI), addressing and numbering schemes. 2. Railway telecommunications : broadcast and group calls, fast call set-up 'associated with the priority and pre-emption mechanisms. 3. ERTMS/European Rail Traffic Management System. Based on the extended GSM standard, a GSM demonstrator is to be developed to be fully compliant with the overall spectrum of railway requirements. This demonstrator is to be subsequently validated on a number of trial sites, entailing a diversity of topographical conditions. Towards this aim the project will develop a common set of test specifications and test tools which will create the bases for subsequent certification of GSM-R installations.
Secondary objective:
The results of this project will give a significant contribution towards the "Interoperability Technical Specifications" which are being developed as a consequence of the Council decision regarding the Directive on Interoperability
Demo Sites:
Demonstration sites on "SNCF, DB and FS" networks
Links with other projects, tasks, areas, programmes, policy actions: 1. European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) activities 2. Directive regarding Interoperability of High-Speed Train Network 3. Trans european Networks
