The European Commission, DG XII, has published a brochure on steel research in the European Coal and Steel Community. Entitled "Investing in Europe's industrial future", it examines the ECSC steel industry, its position in the world, and its role for the future. In particular, the brochure presents the findings of a recent evaluation of the ECSC steel industry, which analysed the financial returns of a representative sample of ECSC research carried out between 1981 and 1990 into four key areas: blast furnaces, steelmaking, continuous casting and rolling mills. The findings show that just ECU 76 million of ECSC research resulted in a financial return of at least ECU 1,600 million. Other issues examined include new steel production technologies, and the challenges posed by the future utilization of steel. Technical reports resulting from 500 projects completed since 1986, as part of the ECSC's Steel Demonstration programme, are commercially available under the Commission's EUR publication series. Information on these reports can be found in: - The list of final reports for ECSC contracts in iron and steel research: XII/314/94; - Synopses of ECSC contracts in iron and steel research (1986-1993): EUR 15912 (EN).
