Project description Challenging current ThinkingPhonon-Assisted Processes for Energy Transfer and Sensing Show the project objective Hide the project objective There is mounting experimental and theoretical evidence that suggests that coherent electronic and vibrational dynamics are essential to understand physiological processes. This project addresses this newly emerging frontier between biology and quantum physics by aiming to determine the role of coherent vibrational dynamics in the efficiency of energy storage in natural and artificial light harvesting systems, as well as in odour recognition. Although these are at first sight two very different biological processes, in both cases their effectiveness is now believed to rely on phonon-assisted mechanisms. In fact, more generally, it is becoming increasingly clear that vibrational dynamics plays a key role in establishing the fundamental connection between structure and function of protein complexes. In this project we not only plan to experimentally demonstrate the crucial role of the phonon-assisted dynamics in facilitating efficient energy transfer in chromophoric complexes and odour recognition, but also to develop a general theoretical framework to describe and understand the role coherent vibrations play in the dynamics of biomolecular systems, as well as to develop methods to identify the presence and properties of such vibrations. Furthermore, we aim at controlling the vibrational dynamics for the development of efficient artificial light harvesting systems. To attain these goals we develop a truly multidisciplinary and original approach. The project will be developed in close collaboration between theorists and experimentalists, and is expected to yield an understanding of photosynthesis and olfaction at the most fundamental level, thus contributing in a unique way to such important challenges as the development of more efficient light harvesting technologies or artificial odour sensors. Furthermore, the understanding and control of environment-assisted coherent dynamics could potentially lead to new forms of robust quantum information processing in the future Fields of science natural sciencesphysical sciencesquantum physicsnatural sciencesbiological sciencesbiochemistrybiomoleculesproteinsengineering and technologyelectrical engineering, electronic engineering, information engineeringelectronic engineeringcomputer hardwarequantum computersengineering and technologyelectrical engineering, electronic engineering, information engineeringelectronic engineeringsensorsnatural sciencesbiological sciencesbotany Programme(s) FP7-ICT - Specific Programme "Cooperation": Information and communication technologies Topic(s) ICT-2013.9.1 - Challenging current Thinking Call for proposal FP7-ICT-2013-C See other projects for this call Funding Scheme CP - Collaborative project (generic) Coordinator INSTITUTO DE TELECOMUNICACOES EU contribution € 315 200,00 Address CAMPUS UNIVERSITARIO DE SANTIAGO UNIVERSIDADE DE AVEIRO 3810 193 Gloria E Vera Cruz Portugal See on map Activity type Research Organisations Administrative Contact Sara Correia (Mrs.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window Total cost No data Participants (7) Sort alphabetically Sort by EU Contribution Expand all Collapse all UNIVERSITAET ULM Germany EU contribution € 244 920,00 Address HELMHOLTZSTRASSE 16 89081 Ulm See on map Region Baden-Württemberg Tübingen Ulm, Stadtkreis Activity type Higher or Secondary Education Establishments Administrative Contact Michaela Schuhmacher (Mrs.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window Total cost No data CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE CNRS France EU contribution € 254 270,00 Address RUE MICHEL ANGE 3 75794 Paris See on map Region Ile-de-France Ile-de-France Paris Activity type Research Organisations Administrative Contact Bastien PINCANON (Mr.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window Total cost No data EREVNITIKO KENTRO VIOIATRIKON EPISTIMON ALEXANDROS FLEMINGK Greece EU contribution € 192 600,00 Address FLEMING STREET 34 16672 Vari-Athens See on map Region Αττική Aττική Ανατολική Αττική Activity type Research Organisations Administrative Contact Efthimios Skoulakis (Dr.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window Total cost No data UNIVERSITA DEGLI STUDI DI PADOVA Italy EU contribution € 258 120,00 Address VIA 8 FEBBRAIO 2 35122 Padova See on map Region Nord-Est Veneto Padova Activity type Higher or Secondary Education Establishments Administrative Contact Elisabetta Collini (Dr.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window Total cost No data STICHTING VU Netherlands EU contribution € 306 000,00 Address DE BOELELAAN 1105 1081 HV Amsterdam See on map Region West-Nederland Noord-Holland Groot-Amsterdam Activity type Higher or Secondary Education Establishments Administrative Contact Yvonne Kops (Dr.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window Total cost No data UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON EU contribution € 263 314,00 Address GOWER STREET WC1E 6BT LONDON See on map Activity type Higher or Secondary Education Establishments Administrative Contact Machell Giles (Mr.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window Total cost No data UNIVERSITE D'ORLEANS France EU contribution € 0,00 Address CHATEAU DE LA SOURCE 45067 Orleans Cedex 2 See on map Region Centre — Val de Loire Centre — Val de Loire Loiret Activity type Higher or Secondary Education Establishments Administrative Contact Sylvie Legroux (Mrs.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window Total cost No data
