CHANGES THE LEAF-ATMOSPHERE INTERFACE IN RELATION WITH FOREST DECLINE

Objective

TO GENERATE SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION IN ORDER TO ELUCIDATE THE INTERFERENCE OF AIR POLLUTION WITH KEY PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES IN FOREST TREES.

A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF THE EARLY PHYSIOLOGICAL REACTIONS WHICH PRECEED THE FOREST DIE-BACK WOULD ALLOW :

-A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE RESPONSIBLE PHENOMENA;

-IN SOME CASES, AN EARLY DETECTION OF THE DECLINE, BEFORE THE APPEARANCE OF VISIBLE INJURIES.
AMONG THE VARIOUS HYPOTHESES,TRYING TO EXPLAIN THE FOREST DIE-BACK, MANY OF THEM MENTION A POSSIBLE MODIFICATION OF THE "LEAF-ATMOSPHERE"INTERFACE PROPERTIES.
IN COLLABORATION WITH SEVERAL EUROPEAN TEAMS, DIFFERENT COMPLEMENTARY ASPECTS OF THE COMPLEX PHENOMENA WHICH REGULATE CUTICULAR AND STOMATAL EXCHANGES FROM AND TO THE NEEEDLES WILL BE STUDIED.

THE STUDY OF PLANTS ORIGINATED FROM DIFFERENT EUROPEAN COUNTRIES (BELGIUM, F.R.G. FRANCE, LUXEMBOURG, U.K.) WILL ALLOW TO DRAW GENERAL CONCLUSIONS AND TO SEPARATE THOSE BOUNDED TO LOCAL EFFECTS.
THE OBSERVATIONS WILL BE MADE IN REALISTIC POLLUTION CONDITIONS (OPEN-TOP CHAMBERS) AND COMBINED WITH OTHERS, MADE AFTER SIMULATION OF ACID RAIN AND/OR GAS (O3,SO2) EXPOSURE IN CULTURE CHAMBERS.
