Objective TO DETERMINE IF IMPULSIVE NOISES AND TRAFFIC NOISE PRODUCE DIFFERENT PSYCHOLOGICAL REACTIONS TO PERSONS EXPOSED TO THESE NOISE SOURCES. FIVE EEC LABORATORIES (FROM D, DK, I, NL, UK) JOINTLY ASSESS THE ANNOYANCE RATINGS BY VOLUNTEERS IN LABORATORY LISTENING TO A VARIETY OF IMPULSIVE NOISES AND TRAFFIC NOISE,RANDOMLY PRESENTED (ALONE OR IN COMBINATION) DURING 5 MINUTES. IN EACH LABORATORY, 20 TO 50 PERSONS WILL BE EXPOSED TO DIFFERENT IMPULSIVE NOISES AND TO TRAFFIC NOISE, REPRODUCED AT 4 DIFFERENT EQUIVALENT NOISE LEVELS LAEQ FROM 35 TO 55 DB. AFTER EACH EXPOSURE, THE VOLUNTEER COMPLETES A BRIEF QUESTIONNAIRE AND RATES HIS ANNOYANCE ON A 10 POINT DIGITAL SCALE. THE REGRESSION LINES BETWEEN LAEQ AND ANNOYANCE RATING FOR IMPULSIVE NOISES WILL BE COMPARED TO THE REGRESSION LINES FOR TRAFFIC NOISE TO ESTIMATE IF AN ADJUSTMENT OF THE IMPULSIVE NOISE LEVELS IS NECESSARY. IN PARALLEL WITH THESE LABORATORY STUDIES, OTHER RESEARCH TEAMS CARRY OUT FIELD SURVEYS AROUND IMPULSIVE NOISE SOURCES BY QUESTIONNAIRES AND NOISE MEASUREMENTS.
