UTILIZATION OF THERMOPLASTIC TWIN INJECTOR PIPES IN A GEOTHERMAL PRODUCTION WELL

Objective

Testing of a new type of pipes with no metallic part except at the surface and in the open hole section of the reservoir. Two twin pipes will be installed in the production well of Villeneuve St. Georges/Ile de France. At the surface one of the pipes will be fed by a high pressure pump (40 Bars) for the injection of corrosion and crystallization inhibitors, the second linked with a nitrogene reservoir at 200 Bars to control the reservoir pressure. Installation of these pipes need special stuffing box at well head. Pipes are made of two sticked polyamide-kevlar-polyurethane. This new type of coiled tubing is proposed to overcome technical difficulties met on other geothermal doublets in the Paris basin.
The project started after some static experiments were run in surface in the Cachan doublet with Tecalemit tubings in Polyamide-kevlar. The first tests were satisfactory. Some utlization of flexible Tecalemit tubing has been done in geothermal well in 1989 and 1990.
The laboratory tests began in Douai in September 1990. Traction and rupture tests confirmed previous calculations and specifications given by the manufacturer. Elongation of the tubing when submitted to traction is very large but remains in acceptable range for the project.
The friction test has been carried out inside a steel pipe, in geothermal water, for two months with a very good result.
Now, final test with the special build three pipes tubing will be run and the definite product will be manufactured.
The geothermal wells of the Paris basin are strongly attacked by corrosion.
Injection of inhibitors at the pump level has been operated for several years with interesting results. Now, it appears that the level of injection must be deeper in order to protect the production casing from the bottom.
As the various devices proposed for realeasing this injection are not completely satisfactory, the owner of the well of Villeneuve St Georges and SPEG have proposed to demonstrate the possibility of using a thermoplastic tubing in the production well. In order to make the demonstration possible, many laboratory tests must be performed before the manufacture of the tubing and of the sinker bar. The running technique has also to be carefully prepared as the time permitted for running the operation is short and as the position of the injectors down in the well has to be determined with a good accuracy.
