Author Support for Student Modelling in Multimedia Learning Processes

Objective

The target of the project is a comprehensive model of the learner including both, content dependent aspects (such as a detailed diagnosis of students achievements, needs, misunderstanding) and content independent ones (such as student learning style, personal history, perception of the information system).
A multimedia database has been developed containing units of learning material in the Earth sciences (plate tectonics). A multilingual user interface for multimedia databases has also been developed.
A prototype was made available on 26/10/92
The project investigates the model of the learner and its role in the learning, authoring and tutoring processes. The project aims at going beyond the current state of modelling which is typical of CAL systems and at providing specifications and/or significant demonstration prototypes of:
- learner modelling systems
- learning environments driven by the student model for navigating in multimedia databases of learning material
- authoring tools for diagnostic and learning material based on the model of the learner
- facilities for modelling groups of learners in the context of tutoring and monitoring

The project investigates (1) how the student model can be built by an interactive diagnostic process and by considering the student history, (2) how it can subsequently (or incrementally) be used to shape an individualized process of learning and (3) how to extend modelling to large number of learners in the context of tutoring and monitoring.

The project refers to a set of already available results within ESPRIT and will be coordinated with other DELTA proposed projects.
