Integrated hot fuel gas cleaning for advanced gasification combined cycle processes

Objective

A collaborative multi partner projet has been drawn together from various research organisations, universities and industrial partners. The aim is to establish the basis for the application of integrated hot fuel gas cleaning systems to advanced coal gasification combined cycle plant. The emphasis is on following a sound development programme from research through sub-pilot towards pilot scale development of the gas cleaning system, with regard always to the issues pertaining the integration of the many systems within an overall plant. In this way the project will aid the development towards demonstration of an integrated hot gas cleaning system fro control of emissions and the improvement in cycle efficiency which can be achieved for advanced power generation systems.

The project will include: - techno-economic and modelling studies to determine the relative benefits of various degrees of integrated gas cleaning for advanced coal gasification combined cycle power production systems. Such work will aid guide the definition of the research and development activities and will assess the practical and economic significance of the results.
- cycle control studies investigate control of integrated gas cleaning systems. This will include an evaluation of the practicalities of various cleaning approaches, prior to major research and development activities being initiated.
- Halogen control R&D on sorbent development, reactor development, integration studies and environmental assessment. This work will investigate and provide design information for halogen removal as part of an integrated system for hot fuel gas cleaning.
- Trace species characterisation measurement and characterisation of trace hydrocarbons in the fuel gas stream for various precesses. The need for development of control techniques will be identified for the trace elements which are determined as being either of particular environmental or process concern and present in concentrations which require control. - Integration of pollutant control systems: development and integration of systems for desulphurisation, ammonia removal and particulate controlling a novel application; evaluation the impact of gas cleaning on alkali metal vapour concentrations in pressurised gaseous streams; determination action of the interaction of systems for desulphurisation and ammonia removal in such gaseous streams; measurement techniques: exploration of the potential of using solid state electrochemical methods for the detection and measurement various deleterious species in pressurised hot gas streams; testing and evaluation of various devices for measurement of alkali metals in such streams.
