Objective This experiment aims at two important aspects of the consortium software engineering, which are very related. New software engineering technologies and methodologies will be used to improve the software engineering practice, first related to the development process of a multimedia development system (authoring system) and second related to the development process of multimedia products using this authoring system.The first goal is the introduction of new methodologies and technologies in the process of software development in all companies of the consortium, such as the use of an Object Oriented Design and Quality Assurance, in the following phases of software engineering: - Analysis - CodingThe second goal is the reduction of the production cycle of multimedia courseware applications (that are also software) and cause a quality improvement in this products, by using: -a complete general framework. because the consortium have to move to another platform where all the companies can develop their Multimedia courseware's and improve some of the aspects related with this software development methodology, which are: * Coding ( by using a friendly graphic interface) * Test (the tool will offered mechanisms for debugging, among others related with this phase) * Re-use (working with this general work frame, the users can easily re-use the code. For example, they can translate the applications to other natural languages, with safety and simplicity).- new technologies like video, CD-ROM, animation,etc.- reorganisation of the analysis and specification phases- implementation of quality assurance procedures- implementation of demand specification support systemSAF plans to use new methodologies and technologies to improve the authoring system, that is the object of the second goal, transforming it in a powerful framework with the collaboration of all the partners. The extensions to the SAF's authoring system involves the introduction of new programming techniques such as the use of a Object Oriented Language and the exchange of DOS environment by Windows environment. This will allow the improvement of internal software development practice, with direct impact in the efficiency and power of the authoring system.So, the two main objectives of the experiment are, in fact, dependent from each other. With this experiment, the consortium will be able to produce multimedia applications at a price that might increase the demand, and by improving the product's quality make them more attractive yielding better results in teaching and presentations.
