Transition from Functional Specification to Object-Oriented Design

Objective

The user driven specification of requirements usually results in a functional architectural design of a proposed software system. On the other hand, object-oriented languages become more important and increase the demand of an object-oriented detailed design as a basis for the subsequent coding. In this area a significant deficit in development efficiency and application of tools is recognised.

* This application experiment therefore focuses on investigating the benefits of applying procedures and a supporting CASE-tool specifically for performing this transition.

* In order to realise the full potential of the introduction of such procedures and a supporting technology it is required to improve the overall management of software development by accompanying measures.

* Effort and productivity gains will be recorded and used to evaluate the benefits, deficiencies and risks according to pre-defined criteria and metrics.

* The results will be evaluated, reported and used to develop a procedure for in-house training of software developers. The consortium will disseminate their experience by a workshop and seminars, within the COMETT actions and by contacts to other developers.
