Objective In the power generation, nuclear, chemical and petrochemical industries plants designed upon the basis of uniaxial creep data are thought to be inadequate because - of the many assumptions made in the prediction of component behaviour and hence lifetime uniaxial specimen data; - the anisotropy of materials' properties; - design related discontinuities (eg welds, changes in section) cannot be incorporated in uniaxial tests; - differences in surface to volume ratios between uniaxial specimens and real components. By using component testing designers can reduce plant capital costs and preventative maintenance whilst at the same time improving heat transfer efficiencies. The purpose of the project is to examine the effect of variables on the test method in order that recommendations for a standardised test can be made. Status: In progress.
