A computerised guide to M&T for accountants

Objective

To develop a computerised knowledge base for generic application in industry and commerce for financial directors and company accountants to provide an interactive training and management information system to enhance the acceptance of M&T systems by professional accountants.
To develop a generic computer based executive management guide to M&T comparing interfaces of financial management systems.
To develop a computerised knowledge base for generic application in industry and
commerce for financial directors and company accountants to provide an interactive training and management information system to enhance the acceptance of M&T systems by professional accountants.
One of the aims is to raise accountant's awareness of the financial benefits of energy efficiency. The intention is to place greater emphasis upon using energy data within a company's financial management accounting system. By using M&T this way, a company's financial management may then create accountability for energy consumption in
those responsible for its usage.
The objective of this project has been to develop a computer based expert system (ES) for management accountants in M&T. The basic concept was discussed with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and the Chartered Institute of Management
Accountants. A host site was then identified where the system could be piloted, a large manufacturing facility where the cost accountant is the energy manager. This proved to be an ideal environment for developing the ES prototype into a practical management tool for the management accountant in an industrial setting.
The ES system was developed with three basic aims:
* to provide a tool to assess the economic performance of any plant or project;
* to provide a means of evaluating the optimum economic performance of a plant or project;
* to provide early indication of any variation from set economic standards.
The above information to be provided on a simple user-friendly programme capable of running on a desk-top computer.
A final consideration was to develop a system capable of transferring data to and from existing accountancy software packages.
