Objective The research project aims to justify, for Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 4, and before they reach EN status, lower values for strength partial safety factors as compared to present boxed values. This research should result in more competitive, since lighter, steel constructions, a situation that will make steel products of western Europe more attractive to customers. It will also help in achieving the European Community goal of facilitating the free circulation of goods and services within the European Market, by making it easier to adopt harmonised values of partial safety coefficients in EC3 and EC4 when they acquire EN status.
