Comparative study of the effects on respiratory function of occupational exposure to coal and exposure enviornmental pollution

Objective

An investigation of the effect of work place environment as well as the outside environment on the upper and lower respiratory system of the miners.

A study of the synergistic effect of smoking and environmental pollution on the respiratory function of the workers and the administrative employees who will be used as controls.

An early diagnosis and follow - up of respiratory diseases which will be detected.

Five hundred people will participate in this study. They will be informed about the aims of the study and informed consent will be obtained. The individuals who will be examined will be divided into four groups:

- 150 miners living in Ptolemaida
- 150 miners permanently living outside the valley
- 100 administrative employees living in the city of Ptolemaida
- 100 administrative employees living and working in the city of Edessa which is located in an agricultural area without air pollution.

The age of the individuals who will be studied will be between 37 and 42 years. The workers will have at least 10 years of previous work as lignite miners.

METHODS AND MEANS BY WHICH THE AIMS ARE TO BE ACHIEVED

The methodology used will include, on the one hand, the study related to the lignite field and the atmospheric pollution of the valley of Eordea and, on the other hand, the study of the respiratory function and diseases of both the upper and lower respiratory systems.
