Sustainability of coffee agro-forestry systems in central America; coffee quality and environmental impacts

Objective

The CASCA project proposes alternatives to intensive coffee rnonocultures, highly dependent on chemical inputs, unsustainable and environmentally damaging. This project is designed to provide tools to promote ecologically sound coffee agroforestry (AF) systems and management practices. The goal is to combine high coffee quality with sustainable modes of coffee production in Central America.

The project will use an integrated, multidisciplinary approach focusing on the effects of shade trees and agricultural management on:
(I) coffee physiology;
(2) environment (water contamination, soil fertility and carbon sequestration); and
(3) economic viability of coffee systems.

The value of tree products and environmental services provided by these AF systems and the market potential of sustainable coffee in Europe will be assessed. The project will bring together experimenters, modellers, economists and end-users. It will provide policy guidelines for implementing eco-friendly coffee systems.
