Objective New innovative processing methods have been developed for thermoplastic matrix composites using the filament winding technique. This technique has already proved to be cost effective for thermoset matrix composites and combined with the easier processing of the thermoplastics, manufacture of cost effective high performance products can be achieved for a range of applications. Apart from the development of material processing techniques, the aim is to develop specific processing equipment with associated sensor and control systems. The choice of materials spans thermoplastics reinforced with carbon fibres to glass fibres.Standard test methods and quality accept levels have been agreed upon. The processing parameters for different heating methods have been optimised. Good quality samples have been produced, including flat sections and nongeodesic winding. A flexible process control system has been developed and tested.THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME ARE TO DEVELOP NEW INNOVATIVE PROCESSING METHODS FOR THERMOPLASTIC MATRIX COMPOSITES USING THE FILAMENT WINDING TECHNIQUE. THIS TECHNIQUE HAS ALREADY PROVED TO BE COST EFFECTIVE FOR THERMOSET MATRIX COMPOSITES AND COMBINED WITH THE EASIER PROCESSING OF THE THERMOPLASTICS, MANUFACTURE OF COST EFFECTIVE HIGH PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS CAN BE ACHIEVED FOR A RANGE OF APPLICATIONS.APART FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OF MATERIAL PROCESSING TECHNIQUES, IT IS THE GOAL TO DEVELOP SPECIFIC EQUIPMENT WITH ASSOCIATED SENSOR AND CONTROL SYSTEMS. THE CHOICE OF MATERIALS SPAN FROM THERMOPLASTICS REINFORCED WITH CARBON FIBERS TO GLASS FIBERS.
