QST treatment of beams using residual rolling heat

Objective

The aim of the project is to test on an industrial scale the quenching and self-tempering of steel beams with a high yield point and high toughness in which good weldability is looked for.

The following work will be undertaken:
1. Laboratory studies. This phase will mainly be devoted to developing the mathematical model for selective cooling and preparations for the planning and control of the plant;
2. Erection of the plant in accordance with the plans developed in Phase 1;
3. Commissioning of the plant, optimisation of the spray system and the automatic control;
4. Programme of metallurgical tests on beams made of various materials and with differing dimensions. The total cost of the project proposed amounts to LFR 220,630,000 for a project period of 4 years. The Commission, however, proposes two-stage financing, to avoid the funds being tied up long-term (1st stage: LFG 76,543,850; 2nd stage: rest).
