Objective

Indigenous vegetables (IV) play an important role in the African diet, economy & environment. However, they have not featured significantly in the research agendas of international or local organisations, which have tended to focus on improved exotic varieties. IndigenoVeg aims to create a network of leading EU & African researchers to promote production of IV varieties in urban & peri-urban agriculture (UPA). The objectives are to:

- Co-ordinate & link existing research efforts on IVs & UPA by creating a forum where partners can share information on current progress, disseminate best practice, obtain feedback from their peers & refine & strengthen their on-going activities
- Develop relevant, targeted, research proposals
- Disseminate the outcomes of 1&2. These objectives will be achieved by
a)Literature review on IV production in UPA
b)Small-scale surveys on marketing & production constraints of IVs in urban areas
c)Organising thematic meetings on sustainable production practices of IVs in UPA (A.3.2.2) marketing option for IVs (A.3.2.4) & developing policy for the promotion of UPA & IV production in UPA (A.3.2.5)
d)A final meeting to integrate the findings of IndigenoVeg & develop future proposals will be organised
e)A website will be established and maintained & a conference organised to disseminate & engage with a wider audience of EU & African scientists & policy makers.

IndigenoVeg addresses the objectives of the EU FP6 work programme by synergistically networking & linking members of the EU scientific community & strengthening the international profile of EU research in an area of international concern; building & reinforcing strong links between EU scientists & sub-Saharan African scientists & policy makers in accordance with the aims of the specific measures in support of international cooperation; & contributing to Africa's food security by addressing theme A.3.2
