Test facilities in pressurized water or steam for assessment and improvement nuclear safety

Objective

In the frame of nuclear safety and technologies, energy producers put their effort on improvement of safety of existing installations. To reach this goal, large test facilities have been built in the 80?s in order to qualify operational components for commercial Power Water Reactors (valves, safety relief valves, diaphragms, ?).

Nowadays, most of these components have been fully qualified so that the research program associated to our facilities has been progressively focussed on the evaluation of the potential offered by advanced components to improve the safety of existing nuclear installations. Our Materials and Mechanics of Components Department also decided to sponsor new opportunities for research teams and users to access to our research infrastructures, more especially the CYPRES and CYTHERE test facilities in pressurized water or steam.

The CYPRES test facility performs endurance open/close tests under high differential pressure up to 160 bar and full flow rate up to 100 m3/h, with a maximum temperature of 300°C. The CYTHERE test facility performs endurance tests under thermal shock cycling (differential temperature up to 260°C, pressure up to 176 bar and full flow-rate up to 100 m3/h) on valves and fittings and other components. Both facilities can also be linked to obtain more advanced characteristics.

The CYPRES and CYTHERE facilities are a part of the Materials and Mechanics of Components department, composed of multidisciplinary teams at international level, which offers a good scientific environment.
