Objective The tent of the call FP6-2005-SSP-5A (Task 28), as well as wider societal and policy objectives for the NMP priority, form the strategic foundation for BIOPOL. In this text, sustainable management of Europe's natural resources and their integration with human activities, specifically in the materials and chemical industry, bioenergy and fuels motivate the research proposed for this Specific Support Action. The overall goal of BIOPOL is to assess the status (technical, social, environmental, political, and implementation) of innovative BIOrefinery cepts and the implications for agricultural and forestry POLicy. BIOPOL will result in a scenario grounded assessment of sustainable solutions that impact several European key industries, and will generate valuable knowledge to fill in part of the research agenda of the recent Biomass Action Plan of the European Commission. BIOPOL will have a substantial potential impact because it will enable decision makers to focus on the best ways to stimulate further demonstration (of pilot plant production) of the most promising technologies for biorefineries. The BIOPOL action can also have huge potential eomically. The BIOPOL sortium sists of 8 complimentary partners: 4 universities and 4 research institutes. No governmental agencies are included in the partnership officially, but they will be involved through the various partners. Each of the universities and research institutes is leading in their respective fields of innovative technology and supplies unique competence. BIOPOL activities will be performed in close co-operation with ongoing EU initiatives (a.o. EU Technology Platforms, NoEs, and IPs). BIOPOL has a total budget of 0.705 M? and is coordinated by the EU-experienced Wageningen UR. Structuring and integration of the BIOPOL SSP will be achieved through an integrated work package (WP) approach.
