The specific programme of research and technological development in the field of the environment (1990-1994) issued a call for tenders in May 1993, published in Official Journal C 139 of 18.5.1993. Following this call and the subsequent selection process, a total of 52 projects were retained. Contracts for Community part-funding are in the final stage of negotiation, and in many cases have already been agreed. The call covered all four of the Areas set out in the workprogramme: - Area I: To contribute to understanding the process governing environmental change and to assess the impact of human activities (natural climate change, anthropogenic climate change, climate change impacts, stratospheric ozone, tropospheric physics and chemistry, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem dynamics); - Area II: Technologies and engineering for the environment to promote better environmental quality standards by encouraging technological innovation at the precompetitive stage (assessment of environmental quality and monitoring, technologies for protecting and rehabilitating the environment, major industrial hazards, environmental protection and conservation of Europe's cultural heritage); - Area III: Research on economic and social aspects of environmental issues to improve the understanding of the legal, economic, social, ethical and health aspects of environmental policy and their incorporation into Community sectoral policies and projects in other areas of the environment research programme (methodological and strategic aspects of sustainable development, integrating the objectives of economic growth with environmental quality, incorporating environmental factors into sectoral policies, societal aspects of environmental, socio-economic aspects of global and regional environmental issues and actions, socio-economic research to improve the scientific basis of environmental policies); - Area IV: Work concerning technological and natural risks to help solve broad problems of transnational interest through a systems approach with interdisciplinary research (natural risks, technological risks, desertification in the Mediterranean area).
