A Council Decision of 19 December 1991 approving amendments to the Statutes of the Joint European Torus (JET), Joint Undertaking (Decision 91/667/Euratom) extends the period for which the Joint Undertaking is established to 31 December 1996. This permits the introduction of a new phase into the JET programme, to investigate reliable methods of plasma purity control before proceeding to the construction of a Next-Step fusion device. The extension was proposed by the Commission on the basis of the evaluation and appraisal provided for in Decision 88/448/Euratom (adopting a multiannual research and training programme in the field of controlled thermonuclear fusion), and in the light of Council Decision 90/221/Euratom (adopting the third Framework programme for Community research and technological development) which specifies the grounds for such an extension. The Decision also amends the list of Members of the Joint Undertaking, to bring a number of titles up to date.
