Implanted needle for blood sugar measurement

A fine needle-like electrode, which can be implanted in the body without discomfort, allows monitoring of glucose and lactic acid in the patient.

The surface of the electrode has a special film and can measure a wide range of concentrations. A miniature electrode has already been used for determining lactic acid in horses and further development of biocompatible material will result in a version for use in critical care applications in hospitals. Sensors implanted into the body must be made of biocompatible material so that the sensor will continue to function over a prolonged period. The developed electrode is small and shows reproducible measurements allowing accurate assessment of lactic acid concentration in the body.
