The European Commission, DG XXII, has published information concerning the participation of organizations from Central and Eastern European countries in the SOCRATES Community action programme in the field of education. The Commission plans to open up Community programmes in the fields of education, training and youth to all ten Central and Eastern European countries which have applied for EU membership, as well as to Cyprus. So far, the legal procedures necessary to allow Hungary, Romania and the Czech Republic to participate have been completed, with other countries due to follow in the next few months. The agreements with each country provide for financial contributions to be made to the budget of each programme by the associated states in order to fund their participation. The new information published by the Commission is aimed at potential participants in the SOCRATES programme, and outlines the conditions of eligibility which apply to organizations from the associated states, as well as the method of application.
