Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin is to join Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler and Food safety and consumer protection Commissioner David Byrne in hosting a round table on the role of research in food quality. The round table was announced by the Commissioners on 9 April, although the date and venue are still to be decided. The Fifth Framework programme will have allocated 500 million euro to food research between 1998 and 2002, and over 600 million euro has been assigned to similar research from 2003 to 2006 under the next framework programme. Current projects include research on organic farming, animal transport and meat quality, using genetics to improve the quality and safety of sheep products, frozen foods and the preservation of frozen food quality and the characterisation of coeliac disease's genetic basis.
