The European Commission has published a common position for the adoption of a four-year development programme (1994-1997) relating to the environment component of Community statistics. The fifth Community environmental action programme requires considerable importance to be attached to exploiting and strengthening EU statistics to deliver environmentally relevant information which can be compared with, and linked to, the more traditional official statistics in the economic and social area. The programme will augment the environmental component of Community statistics. This will provide a regular flow of data on the environment which can be integrated with other official statistics. Together with the information provided by the European Environment Agency, the programme is designed to meet the Community's information needs in the area of environmental policy as well as providing valuable assistance for the environmental aspects of other Community policies.
