The European Commission, DG XII, has published a report entitled "Childhood and medicine use in a cross-cultural perspective: A European concerted action". The report collates the work of a European Community concerted action on childhood and medicine use, undertaken between 1990 and 1993. The action was funded under the Community R&D programme in the field of medical and health research, an initiative of DG XII of the European Commission. The project brought together researchers from 10 different European countries, who examined medicine use in the home, outside clinical supervision, and after medicines were purchased from a pharmacy. The studies used both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, as well as cross-cultural comparisons. The major participants were children aged between seven and twelve, rather than parents or medical practitioners, the customary sources of information in surveys of childhood medicine use. The report contains details of the theoretical background to the project, individual national reports from the participating countries, as well as cross-national comparisons.
