Objetivo The aims of the project were - to observe and measure the time-dependent effects produced on the whole ventilation system when a fan is stopped or restarted; - to analyse these effects and develop a supporting theory for fan stopping and restarting; - to incorporate this theory in a computer simulation for predicting the effects of fan stops and restarts and to test this simulation against reality; - to assess the effect of stopping or restarting a booster fan on safety below ground; - to find appropriate means of measuring transient flows (since the instruments in routine use in mines are not suitable). Concentration of mining and increased coal production require major increases in airflow rates and hence fan ratings. Stopping and restarting of a booster fan can thus lead to large changes in ventilation pressures and quantities, and hence also in gas concentrations, in a section of the network and can have an appreciable influence on the safety of the workforce.
